Shaun Goodrich Las Vegas Photography 101e Beauty Dish
In this segment I’m going to show you how I shot Lindsey with a Beauty Dish. So your probably asking what is a beauty dish and how does it work? A beauty dish is just a shallow parabolic disk that attaches to a flash unit. There is a plate covering the flash head about 6 inches away, this causes the light to reflect back into the curved main dish. This provides a a very focused light source without a hot spot in the middle. The beauty dish reflects light so it illuminates the model from all angles with a fall off from the edges, where other modifiers diffuse the light like a soft box. They come in different inside colors white, silver and metallic, white being the most popular. They come in different sizes from 16 inch to 30 inch. I have 2, a white 22 inch and a metallic 26 inch. The white is best for the studio and the metallic is best for outside which creates more contrast and detail.
I shot actress and model Lindsey Sporrer’s main image in the studio with a white beauty dish about 6 feet away just partially above her head with the angle pointing down a little at half power on a 1600 alien bee flash unit. You will notice how there is very little shadow on the right side of her face and how it falls off nicely and how the beauty dish wraps the light around her, yet leaves a shadow on the the brick wall. I used my Canon 7D at 160 sec F/10 100 iso.
