Shaun Goodrich Las Vegas Photography 101f Fill Light
In this segment I’m going to show you how I shot Shannon in a natural setting with a little bit of fill light with an on camera flash, First of all what is fill Flash? Fill flash just fills in harsh shadows and just kisses the subject with a little bit of light making the image look more natural. You have to watch it though because if the flash settings are to high the subject will blinded with to much light and it will make them look flat and destroy the natural sunlight. Fill flash works best out doors on people in my opinion because it lightens shadows and ads detail to darker areas. I even use fill flash in direct sunlight, when you use a flash in direct sunlight using a little bit of fill flash makes the light more ambient, you can also add some diffusion to soften the quality and make the effect appear more natural. Fill flash also produces catch lights in the eyes when used outside depending on the angle you are photographing your subject.
I had the opportunity to photograph model and New York “IT” girl Shannon Kelly in New York where they filmed “Sex in the city” on a very over cast day. This was my result with fill flash. I shot the main image with a Canon 7D with a sigma 70-200 2.8 lens and a Canon 580EX speedlight at 1/60 sec F/3.2 500 iso the other 2 images were shot with the same settings but with a Canon 85mm 1.8. Black & White image was shot in Las Vegas with a Canon 7D canon 85mm 1.8, Canon 580 EX speedlight 1/60 sec F/3.2 100 iso
